about

Just as Rothery had done with Spiraling, Mark Kelly would do to The “Other” Other Dimension. This is the pre-Mad Jack version, before Mark Kelly took the song in a whole new direction with a synth lead running along the top the song, nearly throughout its entire length. Eric had wanted there to be a song which really showcased Pete Trewavas. Something distorted, disturbing even, with odd time signatures and crazy bass lines fully syncopated into the song. Funny enough, The “Other” Other Dimension is in straight 4/4 time. Pete cleverly put the bass line into a syncopated mode around a standard 4/4 line. What happened was pure magic. At this point, Eric felt that our protagonist was in the process of being interrogated and examined by the “Doctors” so to speak. Eric wanted to call the song, “The Probing” but that was a bit too much for Pete. Eric wrote lyrics around Pete’s frenetic bass lines and absynth programming. “It was completely mad and a bizarre day at our little studio set up in the ski mountains of Quebec. We were in a bizarre frame of mind that day and I just felt like pushing it to a place that was so far beyond what we were doing up until now. We felt a lot of prog-heads would find the music too psychedelic up until this point so we wanted to give them something truly meaty to sink their teeth into. The madness of this track we felt truly encompasses what it would be like to wake up on a table and find a bunch of things standing around you with different instruments, poking and prodding and trying to figure out what make us tick”. Then I suggested to Pete that we cut the song completely and go back into Spiraling for a bar.. so you get the feeling like this guy was just suddenly sedated again… now at peace with the universe… only to wake up again and find it was still happening and it was all very real. I think Pete thought I had gone completely mad at that point. Perhaps I was. Or maybe… I was just being channeled from “somewhere else”… Either way, as many times as Pete kept saying in his cockney British accent “Are you sure?”, he loved going this far out of the box. It was a sort of release for him and to this day, he says it is the most insane thing he’s ever worked on in his entire musical career, with any band”. This track was intended to be sent to mixdown sounding exactly as it does here. Of course, Mark Kelly got hold of the piece and instilled the essence of “mad-Jack” into it, and took The “Other” Other Dimension to yet another Dimension.
