Dusk –
Mixed by Pete Trewavas / Mastered Eric Blackwood
After the Transatlantic North American tour completed in Philly (Eric Blackwood had joined Pete on the East Coast/Canadian dates), Pete Trewavas came back to Eric Blackwood’s barn “Black Dirt Studios”, which he was leasing from Phish’s former Manager/Record Company president Brad Morrison in Sugar Loaf NY, to begin work on the “Trewavas Blackwood Project”. On the way back, Eric played Pete one of the former songs of his old set… Dusk. The song was a nearly completed piece… with Eric playing all guitars, vocals, drums and bass (no keys had yet been recorded). Eric felt that it would be a great opener to an album and felt that Pete should maybe put it into consideration as such. Pete however… was not quite as impressed with the song and didn’t feel it was something he wanted to work on. The song was abandoned and they went to Eric’s studio to work on other material. The recording process was a tedious one with the duo waking up at 8am and working til 11pm often forgetting to even stop for lunch or dinner. It was a learning curve for both who had been novices at professional recording and now had to know the complete inner-workings of the process in a matter of 11 days… and write and record new material. 3 songs were written and mixed by the duo… “A Cold Grey Morning”, “Stranger In A Foreign Land” and the theme song to the future Hudson Film Group movie “Jammed Up”. Pete and Eric found themselves running out of time as Transatlantic’s European leg of the tour was to start in a matter of days and Pete had to fly back to Europe to catch up with Portnoy, Morse, Stolt and Gildenlow. Running out of time, Pete agreed to re-visit the song Dusk as it was nearly a completed song and something they could “bang out” rather quickly. Pete asked Eric to change the lyrics however as he felt they were clumsy at times and didn’t quite bring out what Eric was trying to portray. Eric Blackwood re-wrote the lyrics (which at times, are still different to the final In The Last Waking Moments… verison). Pete then added a Pink Floydian keyboard patch and put in a lead synth part (which has since been replaced by Eric’s lead guitar and Pete’s underlying supporting lead guitar during the Mont Saint Sauveur sessions). Pete’s final performance on the track was recording the vocal for the “grim reaper” who comes to Eric’s character at a time after so many bad decisions had been made, that maybe there was no turning back from traveling for so long, down the wrong path…
In the end, the song began to grow on Pete, though he would still have some issues with it… one of which being that he felt Dusk seemed to drag in spots. As you will quickly notice, the original “Sugar Loaf Sessions” version of Dusk is significantly slower than the final version than what appears on the “In The Last Waking Moments…” final mix. The song was sped up significantly and the guitars were re-recorded. (The earlier versions of the song feature Eric’s Martin guitar instead of the Godin which went straight in from the board. The Martin was mic’ed and the rain was coming down so hard during the recording that you can actually hear it hitting the roof of the barn, through the mics when the guitars make their first strums). When the final recording of the song was completed, Pete went from disliking the piece to feeling that it was one of the strongest songs on the album. Dusk is the only song to make it to “In The Last Waking Moments…” from the original 4 songs recorded during the Sugar Loaf Sessions. The beginning of the 23 minute epic “Silhouette” and another very short 12 string piece called “Siren” were also recorded during these sessions but they were just played on Eric’s 12 string Seagull guitar (made by luthier Robert Godin who made the guitar that would appear throughout In The Last Waking Moments…).

lyrics

- Twisted
Don't Know Where The Hell I Am
- Blinded
Will I Ever See You Again
- Silent
The Secret That I Harbor Deep Within
- Violence
Hang On It's About To Begin

- Winter
Cold as the Nor'eastern Wind
- Bitter
So Ugly Just Under the Skin
- Distant
I Know That I Will Never Again go Home
- All That's Inside
Drains Into The Winter Snows

- Haunted
This Darkness is Overwhelming Me
- Wasted
Is This What I Was Really Meant To Be
- Broken
Left and Abandoned Here to Rust
- Leave Now
Before The Rising of the Dusk
